Log Periodic Dipole Antennas
A log periodic dipole antenna (LPDA) gives you directional gain across a very wide band with one antenna. STAR Antenna designs and manufactures LPDAs from VHF through UHF and into the microwave bands, with models covering 15 MHz up to 7.2 GHz and gain from 7 dBi to 20+ dBi.
If you need one antenna to cover many frequencies, or a directional antenna that does not have to be re-tuned for each channel, this is the product to start with. Custom in-band and out-of-band versions are available on request.
How a log periodic dipole antenna works
An LPDA is built from a row of dipole elements that get progressively shorter along the boom. Each element is active on the frequency where it is close to half a wavelength, so the active part of the antenna moves along the boom as the frequency changes. This is why gain and pattern stay steady over a wide range, instead of peaking at one frequency like a Yagi.
Why choose a log periodic over other directional antennas
- One antenna, many channels: cover a whole band instead of buying a separate antenna for each frequency.
- Directional gain: 7 dBi to 20+ dBi depending on the model, which improves range and rejects signals from other directions.
- Stable pattern across the band: useful when you test, monitor or scan across many frequencies.
Built for outdoor use: all screws, nuts and bolts are stainless steel.
Choosing a model
We offer 12 models. Pick by the frequency range you need first, then by gain:
| Need | Example model | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Very wide coverage | SLP-153000 | 15 MHz to 3000 MHz |
| Microwave coverage | SLP-6177200 | 617 MHz to 7200 MHz, 11 dBi |
| FM band | SLP-88108 | 88 MHz to 108 MHz |
| Weak signals, long distance | SLPLNA-301000, SLPLNA-100500 | Built-in low noise amplifier, 20 dBi or more |
