Log Periodic Dipole
Monitoring and surveillance work means listening across many frequencies, often for weak signals, and knowing which direction they come from. A log periodic dipole antenna is a natural fit: one antenna covers a very wide band, and its directional pattern lets you point at a source and reject noise from other directions.
Our log periodic antennas cover 15 MHz to 7.2 GHz across 12 models, with gain from 7 dBi to 20+ dBi. Versions with a built-in low noise amplifier (LNA) are available for weak or distant signals.
What monitoring needs from an antenna
- Wide frequency coverage: scan many channels and bands without swapping antennas
- Directional pattern: point at the source of interest to improve signal strength and reduce interference
- Sensitivity: LNA models rated 20 dBi or more help with weak signals
- Steady response across the band: useful when comparing signal levels at different frequencies [verify]
- Rugged outdoor build: stainless steel hardware for permanent or temporary sites
Monitoring and surveillance applications
- Spectrum monitoring: listening and scanning across wide bands with a receiver or analyser
- Direction-based signal location: pointing a directional antenna to find where a signal comes from [verify]
- Interference hunting: locating sources of unwanted emissions
- Communication monitoring and radio surveillance: wideband reception of VHF, UHF and microwave signals
- Site and perimeter monitoring links: receiving data from remote sensors and equipment
Choosing a model for monitoring
| Task | Example model | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Scan a very wide range | SLP-153000 | 15 MHz to 3000 MHz |
| Monitor higher microwave bands | SLP-6177200 | 617 MHz to 7200 MHz, 11 dBi |
| Weak or distant signals | SLPLNA-301000, SLPLNA-100500 | Built-in LNA, 20 dBi or more |
| FM broadcast monitoring | SLP-88108 | 88 MHz to 108 MHz |

For all-around coverage in every direction, consider an omni directional antenna or a discone antenna. Both are commonly used for wideband monitoring. Use a log periodic when you need directional gain. See also Monitoring & Surveillance antennas for the full range.
Installation tips
- Mount the antenna clear of obstructions, as high as practical
- Use low-loss cable to keep the signal strong, especially at higher frequencies
- Protect the installation with a surge arrestor
- Use suitable mounting hardware or a portable mast for temporary sites

FAQs
Which log periodic antenna is best for weak signals?
The SLPLNA-301000 and SLPLNA-100500 models include a low noise amplifier and are rated 20 dBi or more.
Is a log periodic better than an omni antenna for monitoring?
Use a log periodic when you want to point at a source and reject other directions. Use an omni or discone when you need all-around coverage.
Can I use one antenna for the whole band I need to monitor?
Often yes. Check the model table for the one that covers your range, or ask us for a custom version.
